What you need to do to break into Social Media & Community Management

Social media and community management fields are still pretty new in the market. Therefore, navigating through these fields can prove to be a bit challenging, especially when you are starting.

In this article, I have put together some nitty-gritty insights collected from two experienced women who made it into the field, and they are here to tell us what it takes to be an (employed) social media rock star.

  1. You must be a people-centric person

The first point that struck out of the two women is that they are both people-centric. They both agree that to make in the social media and community management, one has to in constant touch with customers and potential customers and ensure that they are delivering the best community experience possible. To achieve this, you need to create valuable content, optimize engagement on social channels, and more importantly, make people feel excited when they lay their hands on your product for the first time.

  1. You don’t need to be a full-time social media and community manager to excel in the field

The good news in this field is the fact that no matter what you do for a living, you can always make it your mission to create an exceptional experience for your customers. The experience can spill from social media to other touchpoints like email marketing, events, and user experience.

  1. You must have a great passion for creating relationships

It doesn’t matter whether your result is building personal relationships of your own or connecting with others; you need to have a strong network to succeed in this field. Social media embraces anyone with a strong passion for relationships and fosters environments where these relationships thrive. In the past, people used to build relationships after a networking event through e-mails or phone calls. Social media has made it easier for people to connect and build a strong, deeper, ongoing relationship with those they meet. The different variety of social media platforms allows people to use what works best for them.

  1. Be yourself

To be successful in social media and community management, you need to be genuine, authentic, and always try your best to stay on top of the trends. It is evident that the world of social media is so dynamic; therefore, you need to be always on the lookout on best and next practices

  1. Be bold in selling the social media and community management idea

You may be surprised to find out that we’re still required to sell to stakeholders the importance of social media and community management in this age and era. Many executives even don’t understand that the way people communicate has changed and that the companies that know how to create the best social media and community experiences will win. Therefore, be bold in letting people know what you are doing. It may seem challenging, but it’s often the most rewarding when people see how it can impact the business.

In conclusion, even if you have a different job title or you don’t have any job at all, as long as you love interacting with people, social media, and community management is for you. So, why don’t you be bold and tweet that industry you respect? Or contact a company you admire? You need to position yourself and be that community builder that you are. Start now!
